As a former MotoCross Champion, Bill Gwynne has taught many notable two wheel aces the skills needed to drive a rally car sideways. Eddie Lawson, four times 500cc Grand Prix Motorcycle Road Racing World Champion considered it the greatest fun he’s ever had in a car, but didn’t think he was brave enough to drive flat out through a forest! British Superbike riders Terry Rymer and James Haydon really got the hang of it and multiple British Motorcycle Enduro Champion Derrick Edmondson went on to get his rally licence and compete!
Stan Watts is competing in the Dakar Rally for the third time. Riding a KTM450 he was up to 43rd at Stage 4, putting his experience of two previous Dakar Rallies to good use. In 2009 he was set for a top 20 finish but for stopping to help another rider, so we hope to see him work his way steadily up the field.
Stan’s visit to Bill Gwynne Rallyschool was to prepare himself for the 2012 Dakar Rally competing as a co-driver in a car. The first step was to complete his
MSA Rally Licence Assessment and then compete on several rallies in order to get the required International Rally Driving licence. A great deal to compete again in the motorbike section changed his plans, so we’ll keep up with him through Argentina, Chile and until the finish on January 15 in Lima Peru.
